What will the autumn leaves be like in Arashiyama in 2020? Hotel staff recommends some hidden gems

ree

This is one of Arashiyama's busiest spots year-round.

We'd like to introduce you to some of the best spots to see the autumn leaves.

As of November 23, 2020, the area is currently at its peak!

While the leaves have begun to fall in some places,

walking across a carpet of autumn leaves is still quite picturesque.

1. Hokyoin Temple

Heading straight north from Togetsukyo Bridge, you will find Hokyoin Temple, located at the end of the road.

This hidden gem is known only to those in the know.

This temple is located in Sagano, Kyoto.

It is so beautiful that it has been featured frequently on television and in magazines, but it is less crowded than the other shrines and temples near Togetsukyo Bridge.

The red maple leaves are spread over the moss growing underfoot,

and the cobblestone path creates a tunnel of autumn leaves, making this a truly beautiful temple.

2. Sagano Scenic Train

The trolley, a popular sightseeing spot in Arashiyama,

is most popular during the autumn season.

There are only four stations between Saga Station and Kameoka Station,

and since passengers will be going down the river on the way back, seats toward Kameoka Station are popular.

If you're not going down the river,

it's easier to get tickets for the Saga Station direction.

By the way, the recommended seats facing the river are:

For the Kameoka direction, seats D and C (even-numbered seats).

For the Saga Station direction, seats A and B (even-numbered seats).

The most popular is the "rich car," which has no windows at all.

This special car has only one car and offers beautiful views, but

it can be a bit chilly, so please dress warmly.

3. Hogon-in Temple

Located a seven-minute walk from Togetsukyo Bridge, Hogonin Temple is a subtemple (a tower built by a disciple in admiration of his master) of Tenryuji Temple, a World Heritage Site in Arashiyama.

The autumn foliage in the "Shishiku Garden," a garden created during the Muromachi period,

transcends time and boasts breathtaking beauty.

Although it is a popular spot for viewing autumn leaves,

it is also relatively easy to navigate compared to other temples.

4. Adashino Nenbutsu Temple

5. Togetsukyo Bridge

Finally, we'll introduce the familiar Togetsukyo Bridge.

It's no exaggeration to say that missing this bridge would halve the charm of sightseeing in Arashiyama.

Personally, I think it's no exaggeration to say so.

The mountain with scattered autumn leaves towering behind the bridge

seems to symbolize the autumn foliage of Kyoto's Arashiyama.

Day trippers start to increase around noon, so

we recommend a morning stroll for all guests.

The area is relatively quiet between 7 and 9 a.m.,

so please take advantage of the two-hour free bicycle rental available exclusively to guests.

Children's bicycles and child seats (on the back) are also available,

making it a great place for families.
