The Rengehoji Mausoleum of Emperor Go-Uda

The Rengehoji Mausoleum of Emperor Go-Uda is located in Saga-Arashiyama. In his later years, Emperor Go-Uda entered Daikaku-ji Temple after becoming a monk. He built Rengeho-ji Temple at the northeastern foot of Daikaku-ji Temple and designated it as his burial site.
◇Attractions
・Emperor Go-Uda's Politics: Emperor Go-Uda was born as the second son of the 90th Emperor Kameyama and ascended to the throne at the age of eight in 1274 (the 11th year of Bun'ei). However, in reality, his father, the retired Emperor Kameyama, ruled the country as a cloistered emperor.
・Emperor Go-Uda's Arts: He excelled in calligraphy and was known as a master of the shinkan style (a style of Japanese calligraphy). He was also skilled in waka poetry and was one of the leading poets of the Nijo school.
About the Rengehoji Mausoleum:
Emperor Gouda passed away at Daikakuji Hall in 1324 and was buried at Rengehoji Temple three days later. After the emperor's death, Daikakuji Temple managed the tomb, but Rengehoji Temple was burned down during the Onin War. During the Edo period, the tomb was repaired and renamed "Rengehoji Mausoleum."
