Tenryuji Temple

Tenryuji Temple, located in Arashiyama, Kyoto, is the head temple of the Tenryuji school of the Rinzai sect. It is said to have been built in the late Kamakura period by Ashikaga Takauji, founder of the Muromachi shogunate, in memory of the late Emperor Godaigo.


◇Tenryuji Temple Attractions


・Sogenchi Garden: Located in the center of Tenryuji Temple, this garden features a pond, bridges, and stones. Enjoy the changing seasons, especially during the autumn foliage season.


・Hermitage Hall: In the center of the hall, there is a large painting of a dragon that fills the entire ceiling. This painting is truly impressive.


・Tahoto Pagoda: This is the symbolic building of Tenryuji Temple.


・Hojo: This building is where the temple's chief priest lives and is decorated with calligraphy and paintings.


◇Access


It is a one-minute walk from Randen Arashiyama Station, the center of the Arashiyama area. It is approximately a 16-minute walk from our hotel, or a 10-minute bicycle rental ride. We offer bicycle rentals. You can rent one for up to two hours free of charge.

8:30 AM - 5:00 PM (last admission at 4:50 PM)


◇Admission Fee


▷Gardens (Sogenchi Pond and Hyakkaen Garden)


High school students and older: ¥500


Elementary and junior high school students: ¥300


Preschoolers: Free


▷Halls (Daihojo, Shoin, and Tahoden Hall)


Add ¥300 to the garden admission fee


▷Special exhibition of the "Cloud Dragon" painting in the Lecture Hall


¥500 per person (in addition to the regular admission fee)
