Seiryoji Temple, which has also been used as a filming location for TV dramas and movies

ree

Hello, this is The GrandWest Arashiyama.

Today, we'd like to introduce you to Seiryoji Temple in Arashiyama.

Located at the end of a busy street in Arashiyama, Seiryoji Temple is

a little far from the downtown area, so it's not very popular.

But it's a quiet, yet majestic temple, typical of Kyoto.

This temple was actually very popular not long ago.

It was even used as a filming location for the TV drama and movie "Ooku."

It has a truly beautiful corridor!

The Niomon Gate at the entrance is something you've probably seen at least once if you live in Kyoto.

It blends in so well with the Arashiyama townscape,

but it's a truly magnificent sight.

By the way, if you turn right without passing through this gate,

you'll find the famous tofu shop Morika right there.

You can't miss Morika if you visit Seiryoji Temple!

Once you pass through the gate, you'll see a large gravel-covered area right in front of you.

Beyond that is the main hall.

On the right is Chikusen, a restaurant where you can try Morika's tofu.

You might want to have lunch there.

The main hall itself is registered as a designated cultural heritage site by Kyoto City, and inside the hall is also enshrined the Shaka Nyorai statue, a national treasure.

Photography is prohibited inside, so you can relax and focus on your worship.

A corridor leads from the main hall to the garden.

This is apparently the location used for filming the TV drama and movie "Ooku."

The long corridor evokes a sense of time.

Just stepping inside felt like traveling back in time.

It had a solemn atmosphere.

It was quiet and not crowded,

making for a truly unique and wonderful experience.

The admission fee includes both the main hall and the garden, so

I recommend not just visiting the main hall, but also visiting the garden at the back.

Since we visited on November 24th, during the autumn foliage season,

The autumn leaves, layered on the green moss, were a beautiful sight.

(I really regret not taking any other photos of the leaves...)

Also, shoes are prohibited in the hallways, of course.

It's a good idea to bring socks in the summer and thick socks in the winter.
