Sagano Doll Museum, opened in Saga-Arashiyama in 1988, is Japan's only registered museum specializing in antique dolls. It houses a collection of over 200,000 dolls of various types, crafted from the Edo period through the early Showa period.
◇Attractions
・Saga-Arashiyama and Dolls: The Sagano region has an average annual humidity of approximately 60%, making it ideal for preserving clay dolls.
・Origins of the Museum: The dolls were originally collected by a private individual named Ikeda Mansuke. However, he felt it would be a waste to let them remain there, so he decided to open a museum.
・Kyoto Regional Dolls: Approximately 8,000 dolls are on display at any given time, including Saga dolls, Gosho dolls, Kamo dolls, and Fushimi dolls. Approximately 4,000 of these are designated as national tangible folk cultural properties.
