Nison-in Temple

Nison-in Temple is a Tendai Buddhist temple located in Arashiyama. Renowned for its beautiful autumn foliage, it's especially popular during the fall foliage season.

・History: Built by Jikaku Daishi during the Jowa era (834-848) at the request of Emperor Saga.


・Name: Origin of the name: The temple enshrines the two Buddhas, Shaka Nyorai and Amida Nyorai.


・Famous for viewing autumn foliage: The path leading from the main gate to the temple, known as "Momiji no Baba," is particularly beautiful in autumn, and is even featured in the Hyakunin Isshu.


・Remains of the Ogura Villa "Shiguretei": Said to have been run by Fujiwara Teika, the composer of the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.


・Birthplace of Ogura Anko: Nison-in Temple is the birthplace of Ogura Anko.
