Matsuo Taisha Shrine, located in Arashiyama Miyacho, Nishikyo Ward, Kyoto City, is considered one of the oldest shrines in Kyoto. Below are some of Matsuo Taisha Shrine's key features.
◇Key Features
- Main Deities: Oyamagui-no-Kami and Nakatsushimahime-no-Mikoto are enshrined here.
- History: Founded in 701, after the capital was moved to Heian-kyo, the shrine was praised as "Kamo Shrine in the East and Matsuo Taisha in the West."
- Architecture: The main shrine was built during the Muromachi period and features a unique architectural style known as ryonagare-zukuri (double-flowing architecture).
- God of Sake: Matsuo Taisha Shrine is also worshipped as the god of sake brewing, and within its grounds is a sacred spring called "Kamenoi." It is said that using this water prevents sake from spoiling.
