Kogenji Temple

Kogenji Temple is a Rinzai sect Tenryuji temple located in Saga-Arashiyama. Visitors can see sword marks from the end of the Edo period and appreciate Japanese paintings with ties to Kyoto.
◇Attractions
・Sword marks left by Choshu samurai: The sword marks on the pillars of the main hall were made by Choshu soldiers who, unable to contain their emotions, made test cuts during the Hamaguri-Gomon Incident.
・Japanese paintings typical of Kyoto: The temple's collection includes Japanese paintings by Takeuchi Seihō, a Shijo school painter and recipient of the Order of Culture. Takeuchi Seihō was a master painter who was said to be able to capture the scent of animals when he painted them.

It's a 3-minute walk from Arashiyama Station, the center of the Arashiyama area.
