Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, located in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto City, is the head shrine of the Tenmangu Shrines, dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, known as the god of learning. Also known as "Tenjin-san" or "Kitano-san," it is beloved by locals and tourists alike.
◇Attractions & History: Founded in 947 (the first year of the Tenryaku era) during the Heian period, it is said to have originated when a shrine building was built in Kitano after the death of Sugawara no Michizane to appease his curse. ・Patible Cows: These are the cow statues found within the shrine grounds. In particular, the "Ichigan Jyoju Oshi" cow near the main shrine is said to grant academic success when stroked. ・Autumn Foliage: The autumn foliage within the shrine grounds is spectacular. The autumn foliage at the historic Odoi Ii is particularly beautiful and attracts many visitors.
